Auch nach über einem Vierteljahrhundert seit der Vereinigung beider deutscher Staaten lassen sich sozialisationsbedingte Unterschiede zwischen Ost- und Westdeutschen feststellen. Eine Unterscheidung spiegelt sich auch im Verständnis gesellschaftlicher Phänomene wider, die unter anderem Auswirkungen auf Stadtquartiersentwicklungen haben können. Mit der hier vergleichenden Untersuchung der Berliner Stadtquartiere Wrangelkiez und Marzahn-NordWest wurden erstmalig soziokulturelle Unterschiede bei der Betrachtung gesellschaftspolitischer Phänomene berücksichtigt. Beispielhaft wird das gesellschaftliche Phänomen der Armut untersucht und als soziologische Kategorie dargestellt. Die gesellschaftliche Bedeutung von Armut wird anhand der theoretischen Konzeptionen der Sozialisation, des Milieus sowie des Lebensstils, vor der Frage der Generation und dem Habitus untersucht. Eine besondere Herausstellung erfährt dabei die Bedeutung der politisch-ideologischen Sozialisation in der DDR. Eine Analyse des sozialen Raums, auf der theoretischen Grundlage Pierre Bourdieus, zeigt sowohl neue Erkenntnisse als auch Forschungsperspektiven für die Stadtsoziologie, der Armuts- und der deutschen Transformationsforschung auf.
