Die jüdische Pianistin, geboren 1911, die den Holocaust überlebte, verfasste nach dem Krieg ihre Jugenderinnerung. Ihr Vater, ein "Schlemihl", ein Pechvogel, dessen Geschäfte immer schlecht gingen, lag im Dauerstreit mit der Mutter, die aus gutem Hause stammte. Wenn der Ehekrach zu doll wurde, reisten Mutter und Tochter für unbestimmte Zeit nach Antwerpen ins herrschaftliche Haus der Großmutter. Hier begegnete die 12-jährige Gittel, wie sie im Roman heißt, der vornehmen, älteren Lucie, die sie einlädt auf ihrem Steinway-Klavier zu spielen. Gittel ist fasziniert vom Haus der reichen Bankiersfamilie und fällt am Ende einer Intrige der älteren Freundin zum Opfer. Mit Witz und jugendlicher Ahnungslosigkeit erzählt Simons diese warmherzige Geschichte der jüdischen Großfamilien zwischen Armut und Reichtum. Kurzzeitig versuchen die Niederländer in Berlin ihr Glück, doch durch die Inflation und die Währungsreform 1923 verlieren sie alles. Das Vorwort der Wiederentdeckung in augenfreundlichem Druck geht auf die Werkgeschichte des Romans ein, der für ältere Leserinnen ab mittleren Beständen gern empfohlen wird. [Cornelia Jetter]
