En videnskabsmand sagde engang, at Salmonsens Konversationsleksikon gjorde de fleste andre bøger overflødige. Det hævdede forlaget i hvert fald i sit salgsmateriale i 1893. Og encyklopædierne solgte hurtigere, end de kunne skrives. Viden blev mere folkelig, da det nu var økonomisk muligt – og lidt trendy – at pynte stuen med et opslagsværk i 20-30 bind. Man kom ikke bare fra et hjem med klaver, men også fra et hjem med leksikon. De franske, engelske og tyske opslagsværker kunne sættes i kælderen, for Danmark havde fået sit eget. Encyklopædiernes historie er fortællingen om generationers adgang til viden og national identitet og kan stadig få folk op i det røde felt.
