"In the present book the reader will recognize without difficulty the essentials of our textbook published by the University of Rio de Janeiro. But at the same time he will not fail to note many important differences. Several chapters have been entirely rewritten; others have been drastically revised. While some discussions have been shortened or eliminated, a great deal of new material has been introduced. The progression from one problem to another has been made smoother, clearer, and more coherent. Yet a certain independence of order in the chapters has been preserved. This will allow the teacher to follow the order of his own choice, that better suits the demands of various schedules and the actual needs of his students. Some chapters may even be omitted without sensibly affecting psychological knowledge. Also, the historical data concerning the origin and development of certain ideas has been appreciably reduced; they appear only where reference to historical background seems to contribute notably to the better understanding of these ideas. This book examines psychological methods, sensation, specific nerve energy and cortical localization, psychometrics, perception, imagery, intellect, memory, association of images and ideas, pleasantness and unpleasantness, tendencies, passions, emotions, will, attention, action, speech, habit, ego or self, consciousness, character, graphology, dreams, hypnosis, psychopathology, and parapsychology."
