A glimpse into the "Space Race" is provided in this film. A history of Russian scientists developing ideas for rockets that could fly into Earth's orbit is provided at the beginning of the film, with coverage of Nikolai Kibalchich's (1853-1881) experiments on rocket propulsion and his incarceration in the Peter and Paul Fortress, St Petersburg. Innovations in aviation - such as the development of the Tupolev Tu-104, the first successful jet airliner - is also captured at the beginning of the film. The coverage then moves on to the numerous rocket launches which preceded the launch of the two low orbit Earth satellites Sputnik 1 and Sputnik 2. The reception of the launch by countries around the world is covered, and Laika the dog (one of the first animals in space) also makes an appearance
