Seit Smolka in "Rad ab" (BA 8/05, 5. Auflage 2013) über seine Weltumrundung berichtete, haben andere Fahrer wie zuletzt Felix Starck (ID-A 8/16), Elie Truc-Vallet (ID-A 20/18) und Joshua Cunningham (ID-A 27/18) vergleichbare Touren unternommen. Zu kürzeren Rad-Reisen starteten Thomas Widerin (ID-A 51/14, 46/18) und Fredy Gareis (ID-A 34/14), während Rolf Lange eine "Weltenreise" (ID-A 49/18) mit dem Motorrad machte. Die Fortsetzung von "Rad ab" über eine von 2013 bis 2017 dauernde, durch 68 Länder führende Reise ist ähnlich gelungen wie der Vorgänger. Der Autor beschreibt ohne einen ausdrücklich sozialkritischen Ansatz, aber scharf beobachtend Abenteuer in unwegsamen Landschaften und übervölkerten Städten genauso wie die von Land zu Land wechselnden Kulturen und Mentalitäten. Trotz einiger unangenehmer Erfahrungen überwogen positive Eindrücke von der Gastfreundschaft und Herzlichkeit gerade armer Menschen. Das mit kleinen Farbfotos im Text ansprechend gestaltete Taschenbuch unterhält nicht nur, sondern erlaubt auch einen unmittelbaren Blick auf die Lage der Welt. Vielen Bibliotheken empfohlen! Job gekündigt, Auto verkauft, Wohnung leergeräumt und alles, was man für viereinhalb Jahre braucht, in ein paar Packtaschen verstaut - im Frühjahr 2013 lässt der Erlanger Abenteurer Peter Smolka das bequeme Leben hinter sich, um zum zweiten Mal den Globus zu umradeln. Er startet nach Osten. Eine Reise ins Ungewisse. Bis nach Russland begleiten ihn drei Freunde aus Erlangen, jenseits von Moskau ist Smolka dann allein unterwegs. Auf langen Umwegen über Pakistan und Südindien geht es weiter nach China, wo er an der Grenze vier Wochen lang festsitzt. Ein Jahr nach dem Aufbruch steht er in Shanghai am Pazifik. Von dort bringt ihn ein Containerschiff nach Kanada. Als langsam Reisender ist Peter Smolka immer ganz nah an den Menschen und an der Natur. Er nimmt Indien intensiv mit der Nase auf, Südostasien mit dem Gaumen, genießt die Freiheit in der Weite Kanadas. Auf seinem Weg nach Südamerika kann ihn auch ein Überfall in Nicaragua nicht aufhalten. Als ihm nach 60.000 Kilometern in Argentinien allerdings das treue Fahrrad gestohlen wird, steht er kurz vor dem Abbruch der Reise. Von Rio de Janeiro wählt Peter Smolka den Seeweg nach Südafrika und nach der Durchquerung ganz Afrikas von Kapstadt bis nach Kairo kehrt er über den Bosporus nach Europa und nach Erlangen zurück - nach 88.000 geradelten Kilometern durch 68 Länder und viereinhalb Jahre später.
