Content: "This anthology examines and elucidates how variation in ability (physical and cognitive) as a human condition impacts participation in religious communities and theology and diakonia as professional disciplines. Functional impairment and disability are meaningful human experiences that are important to explore critically and constructively, in a Norwegian context as well. Fellowship – that everyone is entitled to equal conditions and opportunities for participation in a society – is also relevant in the context of religion, theology and diakonia. Religious fellowship comprises among other things the possibility of being able to choose religious participation and to be religiously active, for example through degrees of association and social participation, employment and volunteer work. Many people have experienced exclusion from participation in religious practices and communities due to specific attitudes or physical barriers. This anthology presents new research on a variety of topics relating to religious fellowship with a focus on equality, human rights and views of humanity. The contributors are from varying fields, including social welfare, public health, social science, literary studies, diakonia, theology and religious studies."

Content: In Birthing Salvation Anna Rebecca Solevåg explores the theme of childbearing in early Christian discourse. The book maps the importance of women's childbearing in Greco-Roman culture and shows how childbearing discourse interfaces with salvation discourse in three early Christian texts: the Pastoral Epistles, the Acts of Andrew and the Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicitas. Issues of gender and class are explored through an intersectional analysis. In particular, the institution of slavery, and its implications for ideas about salvation in these texts are drawn out. Birthing Salvation offers fresh interpretations of these texts, including the peculiar statement in 1 Tim 2:15 that women "will be saved through childbearing."
Note: Front Matter -- Introduction -- On Waves, Discourses and Intersections -- Greco-Roman Childbearing Discourse -- The Pastoral Epistles -- The Acts of Andrew -- The Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicitas -- Conclusion -- Bibliography -- Indexes.

Content: "Negotiating the Disabled Body explores how non-normative bodies are presented in early Christian literature through the lens of disability studies. In a number of case studies, Solevåg shows how early Christians struggled to come to terms with issues relating to body, health, and dis/ability. These efforts towards interpretation of unruly and extraordinary bodies appear in the texts in a multitude of ways, from healing in the Gospels to inflicting disability in the Acts of Peter) and from theologizing in Paul's letters to using disability as invective in Papias. Solevåg uses concepts of 'narrative prosthesis,' gaze and stare, stigma, monster theory, and crip theory to examine early Christian material to reveal the multiple, polyphonous, contradicting ways in which non-normative bodies appear"--
Content: Introduction: disability and early Christian literature -- Healings as narrative prosthesis in Mark -- John and the symbolic significance of disability -- Disabling women in the Acts of Peter -- The rhetoric of madness and demon possession -- Judas the Monster: policing the borders of the human -- Eunuchs in/and the Kingdom of God -- Conclusion: polyphonic voices
