Dag Solstad (zuletzt "Armand V."; BA 10/08), Jahrgang 1941, ist einer der führenden Romanciers Norwegens. Der bereits 1999 im Original erschienene Roman erzählt von Singer, dessen Vorname nicht verraten, nur als T. abgekürzt wird. Singer ist 34 Jahre alt, lebt zu Beginn der 1980er in Oslo und hat gerade seine Ausbildung zum Bibliothekar abgeschlossen. Meistens würde er am liebsten verschwinden, ist ein Einzelgänger und leidet unter einer ungeheuren Scham, ihm ist fast alles peinlich. Aber nun tritt er eine Stelle in einer Kleinstadt an und es gelingt ihm, ein ruhiges Leben zu führen. Schon bald verliebt er sich in die Töpferin Merete und zieht mit ihr und ihrer kleinen Tochter zusammen. Aber die Beziehung hält nicht. Als die Trennung bevor steht, stirbt Merete bei einem Unfall. Und auch hier schämt sich Singer und erzählt nichts von den Problemen. Stattdessen geht er mit dem Mädchen zurück nach Oslo. Solstad bleibt gegenüber seinem Protagonisten sehr distanziert. Keine einfache Lektüre, die aber sehr gerne größeren Beständen empfohlen wird.

Singer ist 34 Jahre alt, ein schambehafteter Mensch, der gerade eine Ausbildung zum Bibliothekar beendet hat, geht in die Provinz, wo er ein ruhiges Leben führen möchte. Als dort eine Beziehung dramatisch endet, schafft er es wieder nicht, seine Scham zu überwinden.
