Italien war fraglos das beliebteste Reiseland des 19. Jahrhunderts. Es ist das Land, in dem Zitronen blühen, die Antike in die abendländische Geschichte unübersehbar hineinragt und die Renaissance unübersehbar die Gegenwart prägt. Betuchtere Reisende brachten nicht selten aufwendige Alben mit Originalfotografien mit heim, die in wunderbaren Ansichten die wichtigsten Etappen ihrer Tour versammelten. Das Album, das hier als Faksimile in Buchform erscheint, zeigt Aufnahmen aus Venedig, Florenz und Neapel in einem für die Zeit ungewöhnlichen Kabinett-Format. Ihre Autoren sind drei der bekanntesten damals in Italien tätigen Fotografen, die hier gleichsam ihre Stadt portraitieren: Carlo Naya (Venedig), Fratelli Alinari (Florenz) und Giorgio Sommer (Neapel mit Umgebung). Die Bilder des Albums werden kommentiert, ergänzt durch Dokumente und Texte aus der Ausgabe von 1876/77 desjenigen Reiseführers, der seinerzeit die Reiserouten bestimmte: dem Baedeker. So kann man in Bildern durch das Italien des 19. Jahrhunderts reisen.
