Die erste Biographie über die Sängerin stützt sich auf umfangreiche Archivrecherchen und geht auf Frida Leiders herausragende gesangliche Fähigkeiten ebenso ein wie auf die Problematik der Kunstausübung im totalitären NS-Regime. Frida Leider sang mit internationalem Erfolg unter Dirigenten wie Wilhelm Furtwängler, Erich Kleiber, Bruno Walter und Sir Thomas Beecham. In Bayreuth, dem kulturellen Aushängeschild der Nationalsozialisten, saßen Hitler, Goebbels und Göring im Festspielhaus. Während die Sängerin ihr Publikum durch ihre vertiefte Darstellung der Wagnerschen Rollen erschütterte und das Werk künstlerisch-geistig ausdeutete, instrumentalisierte der „Führer“, der sich mit Wagners Werk, Leben und Denken identifizierte, lediglich das „heldenhafte Volkstum“ des Komponisten, das in sein Weltbild passte. Als „jüdisch Versippte“ ließ Bayreuth Leider schließlich fallen, ihre Karriere zerbrach. Nach dem Krieg gab es in der Musikkultur keine „Stunde null“ – Opfer, Angepasste wie Widerständler dachten nur noch daran, zu musizieren und die Vergangenheit zu vergessen. Eva Rieger, Musikwissenschaftlerin und Buchautorin (bekannt durch Biographien über Nannrl Mozart und Minna Wagnr), bis 2000 Professorin an der Universität Bremen, lebt in Vaduz und Zürich.****************The dramatic soprano Frida Leider (1888-1975) was celebrated, apart from her triumphs in Verdi and Mozart roles, as ‘the’ Brünnhilde and ‘the’ Isolde of her age, whether in Berlin, London, Chicago, New York, Milan, Paris or Bayreuth. This first biography of the singer is based on extensive archival research and examines Frida Leider’s outstanding vocal ability as well as the problems of being a practising artist under the totalitarian Nazi regime. Frida Leider sang to international acclaim under conductors including Wilhelm Furtwängler, Erich Kleiber, Bruno Walter and Sir Thomas Beecham. In Bayreuth, the cultural flagship of the National Socialists, Hitler, Goebbels and Goering attended the festival. While the singer moved audiences with her absorbing portrayal of Wagner’s heroines and interpreted the work in cultural and spiritual terms, the ‘Führer’, who identified himself with Wagner’s life, work and thought, exploited only the composer’s ‘heroic folk traditions’ which fitted is own ideology. Bayreuth eventually dropped Leider because her husband was Jewish, and her career collapsed. After the war there was no ‘Zero Hour’ in musical culture – victims, collaborators and resisters wanted only to make music and forget the past. Eva Rieger, music historian and author, until 2000 Professor at the University of Bremen, lives in Vaduz and Zürich.
