Die Aufnahme von Flüchtlingen wurde in der Bundesrepublik immer wieder zum Gegenstand kontroverser gesellschaftlicher Auseinandersetzungen. Der Protestantismus beteiligte sich intensiv an diesen Debatten. Jonathan Spanos untersucht die Kontroversen um die Aufnahme und Anerkennung politischer Flüchtlinge als eine entscheidende Konfliktlinie für die Aushandlung des Verhältnisses von Politik und Religion in der Bundesrepublik sowie als Transformationsgeschichte des evangelischen Christentums. Spanos analysiert die Haltung des Protestantismus zur Asylpolitik der Bundesrepublik sowie seine Einflussnahme auf die Debatten um die Gewährung von Asyl aus einer kultur- und politikgeschichtlichen Perspektive. Besonderes Augenmerk erhalten der Flüchtlingsbegriff, die Konstruktion von Flüchtlingsstereotypen sowie Argumentationsformen. Ausgehend von den Kontroversen um die Zuwanderung von SBZ/DDR-Flüchtlingen in der frühen Bundesrepublik beschreibt und analysiert Spanos die Entwicklung protestantischer Debattenbeiträge. Der zeitliche Schwerpunkt der Untersuchung liegt auf den 1970er und 1980er Jahren. Die Arbeit schließt mit einem Ausblick auf die von massiven innerprotestantischen Konflikten begleitete Positionierung zur Grundgesetzänderung im Jahr 1993.
