Fifty years ago the Pacific area underwent a cataclysmic experience: the outbreak of the Pacific War and three years of bitter fighting on both sides changed the political and social situation forever, heralding the end of the colonial period. The purpose of the paper is to take stock of the impact Japanese attack and the subsequent years of warfare had on some parts of the Pacific. It discusses the historical sites, perceptions of the Second World war heritage, tourism for historic sites among other topics. (DÜI-Sen)
