Il saggio che dà il titolo al volume propone tre temi di respiro molto ampio.Il primo ripercorre le tappe attraverso le quali la prosa si è definitivamente imposta al centro della vita letteraria italiana contestando il tradizionale primato del linguaggio poetico. Il secondo è l'abbozzo di una descrizione sistemica dei generi narrativi, utile per capirne le diverse funzioni nei processi di scrittura e lettura che strutturano l'immaginario collettivo. Il terzo afferma il principio secondo cui nella civiltà moderna la critica non può prendere in considerazione solo le opere destinate a un pubblico di élite, ma deve concentrarsi anche su quelle rivolte a lettori meno esperti ed esigenti. Completano il volume una serie di scritti monografici dedicati all'analisi di singoli romanzi, da Vittorini a Fenoglio, da Carlo Levi a Bassani e Morante.
