    Note: Die mächtige Entwicklung der Virusforschung mußte in stetig zunehmendem Ausmaße das V erlangen nach zusammenfassenden Darstellungen steigern, um den Überblick über die Ergebnisse der Beobachtung und des Experiments nicht zu verlieren und die verzweigten Wege beurteilen zu können, welche die Hypo­ thesenbildung verfolgte. Es hat in den letzten Jahren nicht an Bemühungen gefehlt, diese berechtigten Forderungen zu befriedigen und manches verdienst­ volle Werk verdankt ihneri seine Entstehung. Das Hauptgewicht wurde aber ausnahmslos auf die Viruskrankheiten und ihre spezielle Ätiologie gelegt und diese thematische Einstellung erfuhr überdies meist noch eine willkürliche Begrenzung durch die Auswahl bestimmter Bezugsobjekte. Auf dem Untergrund einer gewaltig ausgedehnten Laboratoriumsarbeit hebt sich jedoch heute in scharfem Umriß die Erkenntnis ab, daß die Zielsetzung der Virusforschung weit über die Interessensphäre hinausragt, welche durch die Infektiosität und Pathogenität der Virusarten bedingt ist. Die Virusforschung ist zur Physik und zur Eiweißchemie, zur allgemeinen Physiologie und Pathologie der Zellen, zur Genetik in engere Beziehung getreten und hat schließlich das Lebensproblem in neuer und schon aus diesem Grunde verheißungsvoller Fassung aufgerollt. Gleichzeitig mußte sich eine Methodik herausbilden, welche an die Dimensionen der Viruselemente augepaßt ist und an den Experimentator eigen­ artige und hochgespannte Anforderungen stellt
