Der englische Titel "German War. A Nation under Arms" macht stärker deutlich, dass dieses herausragende Werk, mit dem der in Oxford lehrende Historiker an seine große Studie über Kindheitserfahrungen im 2. Weltkrieg anschließt (BA 12/06), mehr als eine neue politisch-militärische Darstellung des Kriegsverlaufs (vgl. Rolf-Dieter Müller, ID-A 14/15) bietet. Dieser spielt im Hintergrund auch eine Rolle, aber mehr noch interessiert den Autor, wie der Krieg sich im Bewusstsein der Menschen niederschlug (vgl. F. Römer: ID-B 48/12), wie die Deutschen auf Hitler, NS-Propaganda, Eroberungen, Kriegsnöte und Judenvernichtung reagiert haben. Anhand umfangreicher Literaturstudien sowie der durch weitere biografische Aufzeichnungen ergänzten Hinterlassenschaften von 16 Zeitzeugen unterschiedlichster Herkunft zeichnet Stargardt in brillanter Erzählung ein nuanciertes Bild, mit wie wenig Jubel die Deutschen in den Krieg zogen, wie gleichwohl blindes Führervertrauen, Siegeszuversicht und Antibolschewismus dazu beitrugen, dass sie diesen Weg doch mitgingen. 2 Bildteile, Bibliografie, Kreuzregister.
