Die amerikanische Kinderbuchautorin Julie Fogliano begleitet ein Kind auf einem Tagtraum mit guten Ratschlägen. "Wenn du einen Wal sehen willst, brauchst du ein Fenster". In pudrigen Pastelltönen setzt die Illustratorin Erin E. Stead die Szene um: die Rückansicht eines kleinen rothaarigen Jungen auf einem hohen Hocker vor einem Fenster - mit Blick ins Nichts. Erst die nächste formulierte Bedingung "ein Meer" füllt den Fensterausschnitt mit blaugrünem Wasser. Schritt für Schritt wird der Junge seinem Wunsch nähergebracht. Es gibt Warnungen vor Ablenkungen wie Rosen, Piraten oder Pelikanen. Aber auch Tipps wie, es sich nicht auf einem Sessel bequem zu machen, da man dort zu leicht eindöst: "Schlafende Augen können keine Wale beobachten." Man braucht Zeit, muss warten können und genau hinschauen. Genau davon erzählt das Bilderbuch auf behutsame, eindringliche und entschleunigte Art. Text und Bilder strahlen große Ruhe aus, die Figuren haben Raum - und Zeit. Und am Ende hat sich das Warten gelohnt. Poesie pur, die sich auch auf der New-York-Times-Bestsellerliste fand, sehr gern empfohlen!
