Vielfach wird der Vorprobe, besonders durch die Studierenden, nicht die nötige Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet, sie wird als nicht besonders wichtig angenommen. Solchen Ansichten muß aber mit Entschiedenheit entgegengetreten werden, denn wenn auch Analysen ohne die Vorprobe durchgeführt werden können, so spart man doch durch die Vorprüfungen viel an Material und Reagenzien, hauptsächlich aber an Zeit. Die Vorprobe ist deshalb als ein unentbehrliches Glied im Gange der Analyse anzusehen und muß der Untersuchung auf Kationen und Anionen vorausgehen. Wie eine Vorprobe durchzuführen ist, hängt in starkem Maße von der Zusammensetzung der Analysensubstanz ab und muß deshalb in jedem Fall dem Gefühl des Analytikers überlassen werden. Überhaupt stellt die Vorprobe sehr hohe Ansprüche an den Chemiker, denn je besser dieser zu beobachten imstande ist, je besser er seine chemischen Kenntnisse zu verwenden versteht, um so erfolgreicher und kürzer wird die Vorprobe und folglich auch die systematische Analyse. Ja, in vielen Fallen lassen sich die Analysen schon durch die Vorprobe erschließen, und die systematischen Trennungsgänge werden dann viel kürzer und können sogar vollständig vermieden werden, nur der Nachweis einzelner Kationen und Anionen durch die Identitätsreaktionen muß beibehalten werden
