Das Mädchen aus Chimel, einem Dörfchen in Guatemala, ist R. Menchú, die sich seit langem für die Menschenrechte in Mittelamerika, insbesondere die Rechte der indigenen Völker, einsetzt und dafür 1992 mit dem Friedensnobelpreis geehrt wurde. Hier erzählt sie, zusammen mit ihrem Landsmann D. Liano, Literaturwissenschaftler an der Universität Mailand, in 13 kurzen Kapiteln von ihren frühen Kinderjahren: vom Alltag der Kinder, von der Zeit als ihre Mutter, eine pflanzen- und heilkundige Frau, ein kleines Mädchen war, von den Großeltern, vor allem vom Großvater, der ein begnadeter Erzähler war und viele Geschichten aus alter Zeit kannte, Maya-Geschichten und andere. Ein paar sind hier wiedergegeben: von der Beutelratte und dem Huhn z.B. oder vom Kaninchen ohne Schwanz. In Rigobertas Erinnerung ist ihr Leben damals in Chimel ein Leben in Frieden und Harmonie und in völligem Einklang mit der Natur.
