Content: New in the Netherlands: Festivities and rituals in change contribute to the public debate about immigrants, culture and nationalism. The book challenges the idea that migrant cultures exist in the Netherlands, each with their own traditional festivals and rituals. The underlying assumption that migrants form well-defined communities with their own cultures has been refuted by ethnographic research. The book focuses on celebrations and rituals that arose in the Netherlands as a result of the arrival of new Dutch people: from a baptism in a Ghanaian Pentecostal church to the multicultural event Kwakoe. Unlike from a conventional perspective, in which these celebrations are seen as part of and belonging to the cultures of migrants, the contributions show that these celebrations stem from our Dutch society as a whole. Celebrations of new Dutch people turn out to be a hybrid in which Dutch history is just as defining as the traditions in the country of origin. Celebrations and rituals may seem stable, but they are constantly changing. Under the heading 'new Dutchness', Nieuw in Nederland does not so much paint a portrait of immigrant cultures, but of culture in the Netherlands.

Content: "What happens when religious sites, objects and practices become cultural heritage? What are -religious or secular-sources of expertise and authority that validate and regulate heritage sites, objects and practices? As cultural heritage becomes an increasingly popular and influential frame, these questions arise in diverse and challenging manners. The question who controls, manages, and frames religious heritage, and how, arises with particular urgency. Case studies from Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and the United Kingdom present an analysis of the paradoxes and challenges that arise when religious sites are transformed into heritage"--

Content: Since the passing of André Hazes he has become a more prominent figure in contemporary Dutch popular culture

Content: Since his death André Hazes has become an increasingly prominent phenomenon within the contemporary popular culture of the Netherlands. In retrospect, the illustrious farewell concert André Dank, on 27 September 2004 in the Amsterdam ArenA, appears to have only kicked off a long succession of cultural productions associated with Hazes: biographies, a statue, commemorative concerts, television programs, a musical and soon a feature film. . The figure André Hazes apparently speaks far and wide to the imagination. But what makes Hazes so appealing? This booklet tries to answer that question. It is not so much about 'the man Hazes' or his life, but about what is referred to here as 'the phenomenon Hazes'. The Hazes phenomenon reveals a number of broader phenomena from contemporary Dutch society, of which the BN'er culture, sing-along culture and culture of remembrance are the most determining factors. In addition, Hazes provides an excellent illustration of the importance nowadays attached to "authenticity" or "authenticity," and its central role in emotion.
