"Basler Episode vom Leben und Wirken des Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim (1493-1541), genannt Paracelsus, als Arzt, Naturforscher und in der Chirurgie seiner Zeit weit voraus. Kleinliche Anfeindungen vertreiben ihn aus der von der Pestseuche bedrohten Stadt. Der österreichische Regisseur Georg Wilhelm Pabst, seit 1932 im Ausland tätig und, im Besitz eines Ausreisevisums für die USA, nur durch den Kriegsausbruch zurückgehalten, mußte mit diesem Film dem NS-Staat Konzessionen machen, besonders in pathetischen Aussprüchen, die dem Ritter Ulrich von Hutten in den Mund gelegt wurden. Suggestive Massenszenen mit Hysterien der Angst und des Aberglaubens beschwören ein "finsteres Mittelalter".
