Schloß Wernigerode war zwischen 1945 und 1949 ein Depot für tausende von Kunst- und Kulturgütern, die im Zuge der Bodenreform enteignet worden waren und 1949 teilweise zur Einrichtung eines "Feudalmuseums" im Wernigeröder Schloß dienten. Das Ausgleichsleistungsgesetz von 1994 sieht die Rückgabe der Güter vor. 450.000 Gegenstände - u.a. Gemälde, Möbel, Waffen, Textilien, Porzellane, Silber, Bücher und Archivalien - sind in Sachsen-Anhalt von dem Rückgabegebot betroffen. Über 2.000 Anträge auf Restitution wurden gestellt. Das heute landeseigene Kunstgut wird seit 1996 von der Stiftung Schlösser, Burgen und Gärten des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt verwaltet. Das Buch zeigt die Schwierigkeiten der Zuordnung des Kunstgutes an die früheren Eigentümer auf, es verdeutlicht die aktuell-politische Dimension des Problems und dokumentiert auch ein sehr emotional besetztes Stück Zeitgeschichte.
