Die vorliegende Arbeit zur Gleichschaltung und Manipulation der Presse im Dritten Reich verdient unter verschiedenen Aspekten Beachtung. Sie leistet einen Beitrag zu der historisch-politischen Diskussion, die noch vier Jahrzehnte nach dem Zusammenbruch der ersten deutschen Republik unvermindert fortdauert, so viele und wichtige Untersuchungen und Darstellungen inzwischen, nicht zuletzt zum Thema Publizistik und NSRegime, erschienen sind. Es handelt sich um einen zentralen Bereich des Machtergreifungs- und Konsolidierungsprozesses, über den das nationalsozialistische Herrschaftssystem so unerwartet rasch und total in Deutschland durchgesetzt wurde. Die Analyse der ausgedehnten Literatur und des teilweise unveröffentlichten Materials läßt erkennen, welche strukturellen Voraussetzungen und konkreten Eingriffe jene Gleichschaltung ermöglichten. Dabei tritt eine bemerkenswerte Kontinuität im Übergang von der Republik zur Diktatur hervor, die auch für andere politische und gesellschaftliche Bereiche der nationalsozialistischen Machtbefestigung bezeichnend erscheint. Man mag kritisch bemerken, daß dabei die revolutionären Komponenten im pseudolegal verhüllten Prozeß der Machtergreifung unterschätzt werde: Folge eines zu engen Revolutionsbegriffs. Doch eröffnet die Hervorhebung des Moments der Kontinuität zugleich instruktive Einblicke in den Charakter und die Funktion eines Pressewesens, dessen rasch erreichte Lenkbarkeit die Folge einer weitgehenden Selbstgleichschaltung war- darin typisch für die geistige Kapitulation in Deutschland 1933/34. Die überwältigende Rolle, die dabei Druck und Gewalt, Kampfideologie und Verführung, freilich auch Opportunismus, gespielt haben, ist nicht zu übersehen
