Die Elektronenröhre ist heute eines der am vielfältigsten benutzten Hilfsgeräte der Technik. Von den Photozellenröhren mit einigen Mikroampere Strom bis zu Großsenderöhren, die einige hundert Kilowatt leisten, finden sich die verschiedensten Größen und Bauarten. Bei der größten Zahl der benutzten Röhren fließt der Elektronenstrom im Hochvakuum. Einige Arten sind mit Gas gefüllt. Allen gemeinsam sind folgende Teile: Eine Kathode, welche Elektronen emittiert, Steuerorgane zur Regelung des Elektronenstromes und Elektroden, welche den Elektronenstrom auffangen. Von allen Arten technischer Elektronenröhren behandeln wir nur solche, bei denen als Steuerorgane mehrere "Gitter" dienen, die natürlich verschiedene Bauarten aufweisen können. Von den Mehrgitterröhren behandeln wir nur jene die in Empfangsgeräten für elektrische Wellen als Verstärkerröhren und als Mischröhren verwendet werden (also keine Senderöhren). Die Verstarkerröhren zerfallen noch in zwei Gruppen: Hochfrequenz-Verstärkerröhren und Mischröhren mit kleiner Leistung (einigen Watt) und Niederfrequenz-Verstärkerröhren mit Leistungen bis zu einigen Dekawatt. Die Hochfrequenz-Verstärkerröhren und Mischröhren haben in der etwa 25-jährigen Entwicklungszeit, die hinter uns liegt, viele Stufen durchlaufen. Aus den Anfangstrioden (Kathode, Steuergitter, Anode) sind Zweigitterröhren erwachsen. Das zweite Gitter diente hierbei zur teilweisen Aufhebung der Raumladung (Sauggitter), oder zur direkten Steuerung des Elektronenstroms, der die Kathode verläßt (Zwei-Steuergitter-Röhren, französisch: bigrilles). Alle diese Zwischenentwicklungsstufen, welche heute als veraltet betrachtet werden müssen, werden wir außer acht lassen und uns nur mit den modernen Mehrgitter-Elektronenröhren beschäftigen
