Content: The legacy of late medieval Franciscan thought is uncontested: for generations, the influence of late-13th and 14th century Franciscans on the development of modern thought has been celebrated by some and loathed by others. However, the legacy of early Franciscan thought, as it developed in the first generation of Franciscan thinkers who worked at the recently-founded University of Paris in the first half of the 13th century, is a virtually foreign concept in the relevant scholarship. The reason for this is that early Franciscans are widely regarded as mere codifiers and perpetrators of the earlier medieval, largely Augustinian, tradition, from which later Franciscans supposedly departed. In this study, leading scholars of both periods in the Franciscan intellectual tradition join forces to highlight the continuity between early and late Franciscan thinkers which is often overlooked by those who emphasize their discrepancies in terms of methodology and sources. At the same time, the contributors seek to paint a more nuanced picture of the tradition's legacy to Western thought, highlighting aspects of it that were passed down for generations to follow as well as the extremely different contexts and ends for which originally Franciscan ideas came to be employed in later medieval and modern thought.

Content: This volume is dedicated to the year 1308. Its object is to open new perspectives with an invitation to reconsider our habitual viewpoints, to sharpen and extend them - by considering the year 1308, but also going beyond that year and its historical periphery. Beginning with a detailed local description, attention is drawn to a variety of thematic and methodological facets: perception of events, also bearing the discovery of new worlds in mind, Johannes Duns Scotus in context, theology in Paris, philosophy in Italy, medicine and poetry, Europe's boarders, orthodoxy and heresy, 1308 reflected in art, and from Jewish and Islamic perspectives.

Content: Petrus Johannis Olivi (ca. 1248-1298) gilt heute als einer der Hauptakteure des intellektuellen Lebens der zweiten Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts. Die hier zusammengestellten Beiträge (in französischer und italienischer Sprache) präsentieren auf der einen Seite eine Untersuchung der Unternehmungen Olivis und ihrer Auswirkungen, von der Konzeption seiner Studien und des Berufs als Theologe bis zu seiner Rezeption in der zeitgenössischen Geschichtsschreibung, ohne dabei die Einflüsse einiger seiner Theorien im 14. Jahrhundert zu vernachlässigen. Auf der anderen Seite zeigt der Band einen Querschnitt durch das philosophische Denken Olivis auf. Von den klassischen Fragen der scholastischen Welt, die bis heute in seinem Werk zu wenig untersucht wurden, werden folgende behandelt: die Konzeption der Materie und der Bewegung, anthropologische Fragen, die Theorie der Definition und der Erkenntnis. Ausserdem wird seine besondere intellektuelle Haltung dokumentiert. Der Band enthält Untersuchungen die sich mit den philosophischen Quellen Olivis befassen, mit seiner Verwendung von Philosophen ebenso wie mit seiner biblischen Hermeneutik. Der Anhang liefert neben einer Edition von Impugnatio quorundam articulorum Arnaldi Galliardi, articulus 19, einem polemischen Text, in dem Olivi eine aktivistische Konzeption des Intellekts verteidigt, auch eine erste französische Übersetzung des Textes De perlegendis philosophorum libris («Wie muss man die Werke der Philosophen lesen»), zusammen mit dem lateinischen Ursprungstext und einer Einführung.
