Die zahlenmäßige Zunahme christlicher Kirchen im südlichen Teil Westafrikas ist ein Phänomen, das auf den Beginn des Jahrhunderts zurückgeht. Unter den Kirchen sind auch lokale Kirchen und solche, die in der Folge von Visionen von Männern gegründet wurden, die größtenteils schon Funktionen in einer Kirche ausgeübt hatten. Trotz der wichtigen Rolle, die bedeutende Persönlichkeiten zugunsten der Einhaltung der Menschenrechte und der Demokratie gespielt haben, mischen sich die Kirchen Schwarzafrikas nicht direkt in die Politik ein. Die Kirchen gewinnen mehr und mehr an Bedeutung in den Städten. Sie gleichen die staatlichen Mängel in den Bereichen Gesundheit, Erziehung, Kultur, Armenhilfe und Verbrechensverhütung aus. (DÜI-Ott)
