Avec Ladislas Gara et Gyula Illyés, deux formidables passeurs de poésie tout comme lui, Jean Rousselot a formé au début des années cinquante un trio d'exception qui s est donné comme but de faire connaître la poésie hongroise en France. Rien de pareil n avait jamais été entrepris. Les projets se multiplièrent et mobilisèrent au gré des projets, une bonne cinquantaine de poètes et d écrivains français ; au premier chef : Jean Rousselot. Cet aspect de sa vie et de son travail n a jamais été abordé. Le projet des Orphées du Danube, est de remédier à cette carence. Il ne s agit pas d un manuel d histoire littéraire, mais d un livre de poésie que traversent les affres de l Histoire. Tous les poètes dont il est question ici, ont toujours vécu intensément avant d écrire. De PetQfi à Illyés, en passant par Rousselot ou József, ils ne furent pas que les témoins de leur temps, mais des acteurs ; et leurs voix portent toujours autant au début de ce xxie siècle. Les Orphées du Danube n est pas non plus un livre réservé aux initiés. Il entend s adresser à tous. À ce titre, nous n avons pas cru inopportun d apporter quelques repères et précisions sur la réception des poètes hongrois en France ; sur les relations culturelles franco-hongroises, comme sur l Histoire de la Hongrie, et ce, de manière à mieux revenir sur la relation de Jean Rousselot avec la poésie magyare ; poèmes à l appui, tout au long de ce livre, dont la deuxième partie est consacrée au fruit d une longue amitié de vingt-sept ans, de 1956 à 1983, soit à la correspondance inédite de Jean Rousselot avec Gyula Illyés.
