"Im Juli 1975 reiste Monica Flaherty (1920-2008) die Tochter von Robert und Frances Flaherty, auf die samoanische Insel Savai‘i, auf der ihre Eltern im Jahr 1926 den stummen Dokumentarfilm "Moana" gedreht hatten. Zusammen mit Ricky Leacock, dem Pionier des Direct Cinema, und Sarah Hudson, einer seiner Studentinnen vom Massachusetts Institute of Technology, vertont sie den Film ihrer Eltern. Dazu nimmt sie Originaltöne und Geräusche auf wie Vogelgezwitscher, flackerndes Feuer oder rauschende Wellen, aber auch Lieder, die schon damals gesungen wurden. Monica, Ricky und Sarah erlebten dabei auch die traditionellen Riten der Samoaner wie Schenkungen, Tauschgeschäfte und Ehrungen. Der Film zeigt die Entstehungsgeschichte dieser post-synchronisierten Fassung - ein eleganter, ironischer und melancholischer Essay. [...] Einer der finnischen Filmemacher dieses Dokumentarfilms, Sami van Ingen, ist ein Urenkel von Robert Flaherty und hatte damit das Glück, nach dem Tod von Monica exklusiven Zugang zu ihrem Nachlass zu bekommen. Unter dem unveröffentlichten Archivmaterial befanden sich Filmrollen und Videobänder, die die mehrjährige Arbeit an der post-synchronisierten Fassung von Monica dokumentieren. Van Ingen und Mika Taanila haben dieses Material zu einem Essay verarbeitet, der auch auf die Frage der Authentizität der Erinnerung und nach dem Exotismus des Anderen eingeht.
