Schichten von Kohlenwasserstoffverbindungen geschmiert waren, vor allem von Sir WILLIAM HARDY durchgeführt. Er zeigte insbesondere, welche wichtige Rolle eine monomolekulare Schmierschicht, die sogenannten Grenzschicht oder das Epilamen (nach HOLM), spielt. Dieser an der Oberfläche haftende Film besitzt eine bestimmte Orientierung und übt auf die Reibung eine tiefgreifende Wirkung aus. HARDYS Versuche waren elegant und einfach angelegt, und er betonte die Notwendigkeit, beim Studium dieser Oberflächenerscheinungen moderne physikalische und chemische Auffassungen und Methoden anzuwenden. Seine Arbeit hat mehr als jede andere eine zeitgemäße Bearbeitung dieses Gebietes angeregt. Das vorliegende Buch beschreibt eine experimentelle Erforschung der physikalischen und chemischen Vorgänge, die sich beim Berühren und Übereinandergleiten fester Oberflächen abspielen, sowie ein Suchen nach dem Mechanismus der Reibung und der Grenzschmierung. Die erste Frage, die wir uns stellen, lautet: Welche wirkliche Kontaktfläche entsteht, wenn feste Körper miteinander in Berührung gebracht werden? Es zeigt sich, daß selbst auf das sorgfältigste angefertigte Oberflächen Hügel und Täler aufweisen, die im Vergleich zu molekularen Dimensionen groß sind. Die Körper werden gegenseitig auf den Gipfeln ihrer Unebenheiten abgestützt, so daß die Fläche engster Berührung sehr klein ausfällt. Die wirkliche Kontaktfläche ist tatsächlich beinahe unabhängig von der Ausdehnung der Oberflächen und vorwiegend durch die Last bestimmt, da unter der hohen örtlichen Druckbeanspruchung an den Berührungsstellen plastische Verformung und Fließen stattfinden, bis eine der Belastung standhaltende Tragfläche geschaffen ist
