In Briefen, Tagebüchern und Zeitzeugenberichten, Zeichnungen und Fotos aus dem Familienalbum werden zwei Künstlerpersönlichkeiten lebendig - und mit ihnen die Schicksale ihrer Frauen und Kinder. - - Die beiden talentierten Brüder machten in Berlin als Architektenkollegen Karriere: Bruno (1880-1938) wird bekannt als Planer großer Wohnsiedlungen, Max (1884-1967) macht sich einen Namen als Architekt der Gewerkschaften. Unda Hörner erzählt ihre eng verbundenen Lebenswege als Familiengeschichte vor dem Hintergrund von Kaiserreich, Weimarer Republik, Nationalsozialismus und Nachkriegszeit. Neben großen Erfolgen hatten Begabung und Charaktere auch dramatische Auswirkungen im Privaten. Die Brüder heirateten Schwestern, Töchter des Wirtes der Choriner Klosterschänke, doch nur eine der beiden Ehen hielt. Bruno, der 1933 ins Exil ging und 1938 in Istanbul starb, war der Visionäre, der in avantgardistischen und intellektuellen Kreisen verkehrte. Sein Sohn Heinrich führte einen lebenslangen inneren Kampf gegen den genialischen Papa und den berühmten Onkel. Der bodenständigere, weniger mitteilsame Max blieb in Berlin, wo er sich leidlich über Wasser hielt und das gemeinsame Büro weiterführte. Er war es, der nach 1945 das gemeinsame Erbe antrat, als Professor an der Hochschule für bildende Künste und Architekt des Wiederaufbaus
