Die 1. umfassende Darstellung des deutschen Kinofilms seit der Wiedervereinigung kommt bezeichnenderweise aus Frankreich. Gras ist Dozent für Filmökonomie an der Sorbonne. Im französischen Original 2011 erschienen, veröffentlicht der Alexander-Verlag den Band jetzt in deutscher Übersetzung. Das Buch verdeutlicht, dass sich das jüngere deutsche Kino hinter der großen Ära des Autorenfilms (1970er-Jahre) keineswegs zu verstecken braucht. Dass der deutsche Kinofilm floriert und auch international breite Anerkennung findet, drückt sich nicht zuletzt in der großen Bandbreite und Vielfalt der Produktionen und künstlerischen Strömungen aus, die das Buch gut lesbar und kompetent beschreibt. Gras stellt die wichtigsten Regisseure biografisch vor und geht auf Filmografie sowie besonders wichtige Figuren oder Szenen genauer ein. Es entsteht so ein einzigartiger Gesamtabriss, der von den Anfängen ("X-Filme"), über die "Berliner Schule" bis zum Dokumentarfilm reicht und auch das kommerzielle Kino und die Produktionsfaktoren berücksichtigt.
