"Die zwei Köpfe des Adlers" ist ein historischer Roman besonderer Art. Das geschichtliche Ereignis - der polnische Aufstand von 1863 gegen die russische Teilungsherrschaft - liefert ihm nicht nur Stoff und Szenerie für eine Erzählhandlung. Vielmehr werden auch die Geschichtsbilder und Geschichtsmythen, die sich an Polens nationale Aufstände knüpfen, hier zum Thema. Im Mittelpunkt steht das Schicksal des letzten Warschauer Aufstandsführers, der 1864, schon nach der blutigen Niederschlagung des Aufstands, von der russischen Polizei verhaftet und wenig später hingerichtet wurde. Indem der Autor den Verlauf der Ermittlungen gegen den Verhafteten sowie dessen Reaktionen und Reflexionen schildert, führt er gewissermaßen seine eigenen Ermittlungen über den Sinn der polnischen Aufstandstradition.
