M. Liebermann (1847-1935) bezog 1910 sein Sommerhaus, sein "Klein-Versailles" am Wannsee, dessen Garten von A. Lichtwark, Direktor der Hamburger Kunsthalle, entworfen worden war. Für 20 Jahre waren Villa und Garten Sommer-Refugium und dienten als Bildmotiv eines Alterswerkes, wiewohl eine Entwicklung oder Alterskurve in den Wannsee-Garten-Bildern nicht zu erkennen ist. Liebermann malte neben Gartenlokalen vor allem sein Haus, die Blumenterrassen, den Staudengarten, Gartenbänke, Birken. Eingeteilt nach Motiven, sind 44 Ölgemälde zusammengetragen worden, häufig aufgrund von Reproduktionen, da die Standorte heute unbekannt sind; daneben Werke aus Privatbesitz und nur wenige aus öffentlichen Museen.
