Nach der Scheidung ist Nina Parr, 25, zu Mutter und Stiefvater zurückgekehrt. Ihre Hilfsarbeit im Rechtsanwaltsbüro ist unbefriedigend. Umso lieber verbringt sie Zeit in der Bücherei. Dort bekommt sie von einer alten Dame, die sie angeblich kennt, unbemerkt Dokumente zugesteckt. Diese lassen Nina am Tod des Vaters, eines Schmetterlingsforschers, zweifeln. Da die Mutter schweigt - ihr Verhältnis ist schwierig - beginnt Nina Nachforschungen. Sie stößt auf ein altes Geheimnis und sucht das versteckt gelegene Anwesen (mit bezeichnendem Namen) Keepsake und den Schmetterlingsgarten. Die britische Autorin erzählt mit Abschweifungen und Rückblenden vom Leben der Hauptgestalt und den Schicksalen ihrer weiblichen Vorfahren, eingeflochten sind weitere handlungsrelevante Texte. Sehr breit erzählt, wird nach und nach die Familiengeschichte enthüllt. Die Spannung geht dabei etwas verloren, und das Geheimnis um den Vater wirkt banal. Das Cover ähnelt den letzten Romanen der Autorin (vgl. "Das Buch der verborgenen Wünsche", ID-A 16/13; "Der Garten der verbotenen Träume", ID-A 39/15), wieder für ausdauernde Leserinnen.
