Dieser Research Report wirft einen Blick auf die von Hyperschallwaffen ausgehenden Eskalationsdynamiken zwischen der NATO und Russland. Zudem zeigt er Möglichkeiten zur Einhegung dieser Risiken auf sowie zum Einstieg in die Begrenzung von Hyperschallwaffen zwischen Washington und Moskau. Der Report beschränkt sich auf bereits einsatzfähige und für die nächsten vier Jahre geplante Systeme der USA und Russland. Der Report richtet zunächst einen Blick auf die technischen Aspekte von Gleitflugraketen, aeroballistischen Raketen und hypersonischen Marschflugkörpern und bietet eine Bestandsaufnahme russischer und US-amerikanischer Entwicklungsprogramme. Der nächste Abschnitt führt aus, wie der Einsatz von Hyperschallwaffen in einem begrenzten Konflikt zwischen Russland und der NATO eine ungewollte Eskalation auslösen kann und somit auch die Gefahr des Einsatzes von Nuklearwaffen erhöht. Ein weiterer Abschnitt legt dar, wie das Aufkommen von Hyperschallwaffen zu einem neuen Wettrüsten mit Folgen für die euro-atlantische Sicherheit führen kann und inwiefern die derzeitige Rüstungskontrollarchitektur für die Einhegung dieser Risiken ungeeignet ist. Zuletzt bietet der Report einen Ausblick auf Handlungsoptionen, mit denen die von Hyperschallwaffen ausgehenden Eskalationsrisiken reduziert und ein drohendes Wettrüsten verhindert werden kann.
