"It has been ten years since the first edition of this book. This decade has been filled with a great many substantial contributions to the research and theoretical literature on child behavior and development. In an effort to integrate and discuss these new contributions to child psychology, the author has written several new chapters and reorganized the presentation of the chapters. This edition is nominally divided into the following sections: research methods and theories, maturation and learning, the development of major psychological functions, and environmental antecedents of child behavior and development. As in the previous edition, research and theoretical literature have been sampled widely and intensively as permitted by the usual space allotment for survey textbooks. Although approximately one-half of the bibliographical citations in this edition are new, the classic studies and those earlier reports that have not been superseded by more definitive studies have been retained. It is hoped that the reader will find the current edition to be a comprehensive survey of the most reliable research information about child behavior and psychological growth"--Preface.
