Fortsetzung in "Delicates". Breit empfohlen. Eine geniale Heimsuchung! Jan Roidner

Content: " For days after reading Brenna Thummler's Sheets I have been wandering my neighborhood, haunted, enchanted, and in need of freshly pressed clothing. Lemony Snicket Marjorie Glatt feels like a ghost. A practical thirteen-year-old in charge of the family laundry business, her daily routine features unforgiving customers, unbearable P.E. classes, and the fastidious Mr. Saubertuck who is committed to destroying everything she's worked for. Wendell is a ghost. A boy who lost his life much too young, his daily routine features ineffective death therapy, a sheet-dependent identity, and a dangerous need to seek purpose in the forbidden human world. When their worlds collide, Marjorie is confronted by unexplainable disasters as Wendell transforms Glatt's Laundry into his midnight playground, appearing as a mere sheet during the day. While Wendell attempts to create a new afterlife for himself, he unknowingly sabotages the life that Marjorie is struggling to maintain. Sheets illustrates the determination of a young girl to fight, even when all parts of her world seem to be conspiring against her. It proves that second chances are possible whether life feels over or life is over. But above all, it is a story of the forgiveness and unlikely friendship that can only transpire inside a haunted laundromat. Brenna Thummler's first original graphic novel is a reason to celebrate. She announced herself as an artist to reckon with when she illustrated Mariah Marsden's adaptation of Anne of Green Gables. Now she's illustrated her own story of ghosts and family, loneliness and laundromats. I'm sure you'll be captivated, and as eager as I am to see what comes next! Brian Selznick, author of Wonderstruck and The Invention of Hugo Cabret Sweet, sad, funny, warm, and beautiful. If I can be forgiven for using this word, this is one that will haunt me, in the best way. Dana Simpson "
Content: Biographisches: " Brenna Thummler has always known her life is haunted. Much like Marjorie Glatt, she grew up in a small Pennsylvania town, where piano practice and ghost stories were part of her daily routine. It wasnt until she attended Ringling College of Art and Design, however, that she realized her passion for storytelling (as well as her hatred of laundry). She now lives in Kansas City, Missouri, and spends her days drawing, writing, and suspicious of her sheets." But her balancing act wavers thanks to two arrivals: Mr. Saubertuck, who is scheming to acquire the laundry’s building for his new spa, and Wendell, a ghost clad in traditional white sheets. Wendell seeks friendship, but he fouls up Marjorie’s work each night, making difficult customers even more unbearable and perhaps necessitating the sale to Saubertuck. To make things right with Marjorie, Wendell may need to reveal himself and the ways of ghosts, which could land him in deeper trouble. With washed-out coloring, many wordless panel sequences of Marjorie alone, and simply drawn facial expressions, the artwork effectively illustrates Marjorie’s sense of isolation. Content: "Ist ein weißes Bettlaken alles, was uns bleibt?

Content: "Marjorie Glatt's life hasn't been the same ever since she discovered a group of ghosts hiding in her family's laundromat. Wendell, who died young and now must wander the earth as a ghost with nothing more than a sheet for a body, soon became one of Marjorie's only friends. But when Marjorie finally gets accepted by the popular kids at school, she begins to worry that if anyone learns about her secret ghost friends, she'll be labeled as a freak who sees dead people. With Marjorie's insistence on keeping Wendell's ghost identity a secret from her new friends, Wendell begins to feel even more invisible than he already is. Eliza Duncan feels invisible, too. She's an avid photographer, and her zealous interest in finding and photographing ghosts gets her labeled as different by all the other kids in school. Constantly on the outside, Eliza begins to feel like a ghost herself. Marjorie must soon come to terms with the price she pays to be accepted by the popular kids. Is it worth losing her friend Wendell? Is she partially to blame for the bullying Eliza endures? Following the events of Sheets, Brenna Thummler's second original graphic novel, Delicates, tells a powerful story about what it means to fit in, and those who are left on the outside. It shows what it's like to feel invisible, and the importance of feeling seen. Above all, it is a story of asking for help when all seems dark, and bringing light to those who need it most."

Her follow-up matches the tone and complexity of its predecessor. Marjorie, a white teen who in Sheets grappled with bullying and being forced to step up after the death of her mother, is gaining confidence at school while remaining friends with Wendell, one of the sheet-shaped ghosts at her family's laundry business. In the span of a few tentative encounters, however, the book pivots to the story of her classmate Eliza, a Black teen who is sinking into loneliness and depression and feeling like a living ghost. Marjorie must weigh whether to help a peer and risk her own social status, while Eliza faces the task of claiming her own strangeness so as to not lose her sense of self. Thummler's shaky, slightly elongated figures interact in muted neon illustrations, conveying adolescent emotion. With illustrations that match the often dreamy, multilayered narrative, this tale depicts the interplay between inner turmoil and external pressures with an aching accuracy that provides a powerful lens readers might use to observe their own difficult experiences. VERDICT A strong second foray into Marjorie and Wendell's slightly spooky world, this tale will be best appreciated by readers who can maturely manage difficult content about depression and suicidal thoughts.- Emilia Packard, AustinCopyright 2021 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. " Rezension(3): "〈a href=http://www.kirkusreviews.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/kirkus_logo.png alt=Kirkus border=0 /〉〈/a〉: January 1, 2021 A bullied eighth grader wishes she were a ghost--and then meets real ghosts. In this sequel to Sheets (2018), Marjorie begins eighth grade as part of the popular crowd but is unclear whether she and her crush, Colton, are more than friends. Her family is doing their best to cope with the death of her mom, and Marjorie is helping out more at the family laundromat. The laundromat has a community of ghosts that Marjorie can see, but she keeps them a secret because she doesn't want to be labeled as weird. When their teacher asks Marjorie and her friends to look after his oldest daughter, Eliza, who is repeating eighth grade, Eliza--a photographer buff with an interest in the paranormal--instead becomes the target of their bullying. Marjorie is a well-developed character, and readers will empathize with her dilemma over whether to speak up for Eliza and risk her own ostracization. The author tackles in an accessible, nuanced way delicate topics like bullying, death, suicide, and feeling lost. Although this volume can be read as a stand-alone, reading the first book will improve comprehension of the story and understanding of the characters--especially where the ghosts are concerned. Marjorie and her friends are White,Colton is brown, Eliza and her family are Black. An original exploration of what it means to be seen and accepted. She spent all of seventh grade a social outcast, and this year, Tessi and her friends have made it their mission to make Marjorie popular. The eighth grade class also has a repeater student--Eliza, the daughter of a teacher, Mr. Duncan. Eliza is obsessed with photographing a ghost, even as she increasingly feels like one among her peers. Meanwhile, Wendell is feeling rather ignored, and when sneaking out, he often runs into Eliza, who doesn't recognize him as a ghost. Thummler's illustrations showcase a pastel palette that nicely evokes the late summer atmosphere. Beautifully drawn environments, full of fine-lined detail and dappled light, make great backdrops to the stylized character designs. This title encapsulates the rockiness of navigating friendships and troubled emotional states of middle school, with a dash of friendly paranormal elements to lighten the mood. Content: "The long-awaited final installment in acclaimed cartoonist Brenna Thummler's best-selling Sheets trilogy! Marjorie Glatt's life was forever changed the day she discovered a group of ghosts hiding in her family's laundromat. One of those ghosts was Wendell, a lonely phantom turned Marjorie's best friend. Wendell died far too young and now must wander the Land of Humans. He knows how he died—a tragic drowning accident—but lately he's grown curious about his past life. He wants to know more about why he died, not just how he died. It's not easy, though, since Wendell's memory of his human life has grown increasingly blurry. When he hears a rumor about his death, Wendell wonders if it might not have been an accident after all. Joined by Marjorie and ghost enthusiast Eliza Duncan, Wendell learns that sometimes everything casts shadows, but if you look hard enough, you can find the light."

The first volume centered on Marjorie, a middle school student grieving her mom's death, who befriends a group of ghosts that haunt her family's laundromat. Delicates introduced Eliza, an alienated classmate on the precipice of deep depression, who connects with Marjorie and her ghost friend, Wendell. Lights finds the protagonists cautiously moving beyond their struggles and exploring how it might look to feel okay. At the same time, they are intent on uncovering the hazy circumstances of Wendell's death. As the group explores Wendell's parents' abandoned home and dance school that they once owned, the amateur sleuths tiptoe into murder-mystery territory, but ultimately uncover an everyday tragedy worthy of its own ballet. Thummler's wiry, textural illustrations are subtly cinematic, employing a retro pastel palette that gently mutes the narrative-enhancing intensity of her artwork. Though the work of wrapping up the trilogy entails streamlining a story that excels in its winding, intuitive flow, emotional messiness remains in the air throughout the story, especially in interactions between the living protagonists and their loving, concerned parents. Marjorie's family is white, Eliza's family is Black, and Wendell is revealed to have been white. VERDICT A thoughtful finale to an emotionally incisive story, best appreciated as a part of the series.- Emilia PackardCopyright 2023 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. "
