Anhand von 27 Lebensgeschichten zeigt dieses Buch, wie „Ruheständler“ heute ihren Alltag gestalten, wie aktiv sie am gesellschaftlichen Leben teilnehmen, welche Pläne sie verfolgen. Für ihre Foto-Essays hat Gabriele Kostas in Zusammenarbeit mit Irene Ziehe Menschen im Rentenalter aus Belgien, Deutschland, Frankreich, Georgien, Griechenland, Großbritannien, Italien, Österreich, Portugal, Russland, Schweden, Slowenien und Spanien interviewt und in ihrem Lebensumfeld fotografiert. Diese Menschen kommen aus verschiedenen Regionen Europas, sie gehören unterschiedlichen Gesellschaftsschichten an, sie leben im urbanen oder im ländlichen Raum – ihnen allen aber ist gemeinsam: Die neuen Alten haben viel zu erzählen, und sie haben auch viel zu tun! Das Buch erscheint zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung, die vom 28. April 2016 bis Anfang 2017 im Rahmen der Ausstellungsreihe "Europabilder" im Museum Europäischer Kulturen – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin zu sehen sein wird.
