Mit einer Reduzierung des Blattformates versuchen Verleger, die langjährige Auflagenerosion zu stoppen und das Zeitungsmedium zukunftsfähig zu machen. Die hier vorliegende Veröffentlichung analysiert die unterschiedlichen Konzepte dieses 'Downsizings' bei deutschen und britischen Tageszeitungen. Dabei wird der individuelle Erfolg gemessen und ein direkter Vergleich hergestellt. Jendrik Timm untersuchte dazu im Rahmen seines Studiums in Hamburg und London die Zeitungsmärkte vor Ort. Neben dem redaktionellen Konzept sind die Struktur der Leserschaft, das Anzeigengeschäft, die Entwicklung der Auflage sowie die wirtschaftlichen Kennzahlen Gegenstand der Analyse. Die Arbeit liefert wertvolle Erkenntnisse für das Zeitungsmanagement, indem aus internationaler Perspektive die Auswirkungen der Formatreduzierung bei Tageszeitungen dargestellt werden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Umstellung auf das Kompaktformat nur vorläufig zu einer Erholung der Auflagenverluste bei Tageszeitungen geführt hat. Der strukturelle Abwärtstrend bei den Leserzahlen setzt sich auch bei Tabloid-Zeitungen fort
