Nelly Ternan ist eine verheiratete Lehrerin mit einem Geheimnis. Vor vielen Jahren war sie die Geliebte des berühmten englischen Schriftstellers Charles Dickens. Als sie mit ihrer Klasse eines seiner Stücke probt, erinnert sich Nelly an ihre geheime Liebe. Denn im viktorianischen Zeitalter war es mehr als verpönt, sich seinen Gefühlen hinzugeben. Nelly war 17 Jahre alt, als sie Charles zum 1. Mal traf. Aus dieser Begegnung entwickelte sich eine jahrelange Affäre, unter der nicht nur Dickens Frau zu leiden hatte. - Nach "Coriolanus" (IN-G 30/12) ist das die 2. Regiearbeit von und mit Ralph Fiennes. Das Historiendrama basiert auf der Biografie von Claire Tomalin. Die Biografie wurde von Abi Morgan ("Die Eiserne Lady") zu einem Drehbuch umgeschrieben, welches Fiennes elegant inszeniert. Die BBC-Produktion ist authentisch und sowohl handwerklich als auch darstellerisch brillant umgesetzt. Der Zuschauer fühlt sich sofort in die damalige Zeit versetzt.
