Content:
"Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), which can cause significant impairment in personal, social, and academic contexts, affects nearly half a million children in the United States. This step by step guide provides mental health professionals with an adaptable, evidence based model that uses cognitive behavior therapy to treat pediatric OCD. The authors present well tested, empirically validated strategies that encourage clinical flexibility and creativity. Chapters describe the nuts and bolts of assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment planning, as well as psychoeducation, pharmacotherapy, strategies for relapse prevention, and involving family members in treatment. Richly described case studies illustrate how core strategies can be effectively implemented with youth between the ages of 7 and 18. Includes downloadable handouts for clinical use, including worksheets and fact sheets for parents and guardians, exercises and games, and other clinical tools and resources"--

"Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) affects an estimated one of every 200 children in the United States, and as many as 50% to 60% of the youth diagnosed with OCD experience severe impairment in their personal, social, and academic life. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry recommends cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) as the first-line treatment for youth with OCD. At the same time, parents can search many years before they find a clinician with sufficient experience and training to provide CBT for the condition. This book describes a treatment approach for pediatric OCD that is effective yet flexible, fun yet focused, and based on solid clinical science yet speaks to the innate creativity, genuineness, and personal style of clinicians. In describing this approach, the authors hope to encourage more clinicians to treat pediatric OCD and thereby help more kids. This is a nuts-and-bolts book, and the parts mirror authors' clinical approach to the problem of pediatric OCD. It diagnoses and assesses the condition, develops a case conceptualization that results in a treatment plan, then applies the core strategies based on that plan. Parts I and II walks the clinicians through the diagnostic and assessment processes and describes how to implement the core strategies for a wide range of symptoms and with a variety of youth and their families. Part III presents three cases to illustrate the evaluation and treatment process, from assessment, case formulation, and treatment planning, and from the beginning to the end of treatment."--Preface.
