Die Wikinger werden immer noch häufig reduziert auf stereotype Wahrnehmungen als brutale Räuber und Krieger. Der gut lesbare und fundierte Band präsentiert aktuelle archäologische Forschungen, die die Dämonisierung und Verklärung der Wikinger hinterfragen und durch Fakten korrigieren. Rezension: Die Wikinger und ihre Geschichte finden nach wie vor eine vergleichsweise grosse öffentliche Beachtung (u.a. in populären TV-Serien wie "Vikings"). Zumeist werden sie immer noch als wilde und kriegerische Räuber dargestellt, deren teilweise legendäre Beutezüge Europa im frühen Mittelalter das Fürchten lehrte. Der von dem Archäologen M.S. Toplak herausgegebene Band möchte diese einförmige Wahrnehmung, die gröt︣enteils auf nicht objektiven christlichen Quellen aufsetzt, korrigieren und konzentriert sich dabei überwiegend auf archäologische Zeugnisse. In 25 kurzen und gut lesbaren Fachbeiträgen wird vor allem das Kriegswesen und die Seefahrt der Wikinger zwischen dem 8. und 11. Jahrhundert anhand neuester Forschungsbefunde in den Mittelpunkt gerückt. Vielfach müssen geschichtliche Mythen und die verbreitete Dämonisierung oder Verklärung der Wikinger durch neue Fakten korrigiert werden. Der spannende, fundierte und sehr gut illustrierte Band, der breit empfohlen werden kann, kann grundlegende Einführungen wie R. Simek: "Die Wikinger" (zuletzt 7. Auflage 2021) nicht ersetzen, aber gut ergänzen. (2 S)
