Rose und Michael sind verliebt und haben ungeschützten Sex am Strand. Als bei Rose die Regel ausbleibt und ein positiver Schwangerschaftstest Gewissheit gibt, suchen beide hilflos nach einem Ausweg. Eine Offenbarung jedoch ist in der kleinen australischen Gemeinde undenkbar und so beschliessen sie, das "Problem" zu ignorieren. Zugleich versucht Rose alles, um eine Fehlgeburt zu provozieren und Michael akzeptiert ihre immer wahnhafteren Verdrängungsversuche der fortschreitenden Schwangerschaft. Statt der üblichen Schwangerschaft-Problem-Konstellation liefert die Autorin das bedrückende Psychogramm zweier Jugendlicher, die vollkommen überfordert und panisch sind und von ihrer Umwelt keine Hilfe zu erwarten haben. Die Erzählperspektive folgt der Wahrnehmung der Protagonisten und damit ergibt sich zugleich eine morbide Atmosphäre, die mit den ungeschminkten Beseitigungsversuchen einer Fehlgeburt gipfelt. Wie in "Zwischen zwei Fenstern" präsentiert die Autorin einen psychologisch abgründigen Roman von grosser Intensität, der die Grenzen "herkömmlicher" Jugendliteratur sprengt. Ab 14
