Au XIXe siècle, les productions sur l'architecture qui émanent de la presse générale et spécialisée se comptent en millions de volumes et en dizaines de millions d'images. Cette masse énorme d'imprimés a marqué certainement l'art de bâtir, sans qu'on puisse davantage apprécier le phénomène. Elle défie, en effet, la curiosité de l'historien : comment l'exploiter, pour quels objectifs le faire, qu'en retenir ? Une rencontre de jeunes chercheurs et d'historiens du livre, de la critique d'art et de l'architecture a tenté, lors d'une journée d'étude au Collège de France, de répondre à ces questions. Une conclusion : placer les méthodes quantitatives de l'histoire du livre au service de la problématique de l'historien de l'architecture et de ses soucis qualitatifs. Aux actes de cette rencontre a été joint ici, le répertoire des périodiques d'architecture en langue française publiés entre 1800 et 1970. Pour la première fois, le chercheur dispose d'une liste de 606 revues : un indispensable outil de travail.
