Thomas Tripolds ideengeschichtliche Studie geht diesen Fragen nach und untersucht die beiden Ideen in ihrer Kontinuität anhand von drei gegenkulturellen Bewegungen: Romantik, Lebensreform und Counter Culture der 1960er-Jahre in den USA. Die Rekonstruktion typischer sozialer (etwa spiritueller, künstlerischer oder sexueller) Praktiken, in denen sich diese Ideen manfestierten, veranschaulicht dabei das jeweilige Netz an Überzeugungen der Bewegungen.
