Der Fotograf als Dienstleister, der in die Welt hinausgeht. Der Berufsstand entwickelte sich Mitte des 19. Jhs., einige Jahrzehnte nach der Erfindung der fotogr. Methode. In Wien war Andreas Groll sein erster nachhaltiger Vertreter. Aus der rasch wachsenden Gruppe von Männern, die ihren Lebensunterhalt mit Hilfe der Kamera bestritten, war er der erste, dem ein großes gesichertes Oeuvre zugeschrieben werden kann. Vor allem seine Architektur- und Stadtaufnahmen zählen in der Sammlung des Wien Museums zu den Highlights der frühen Fotografie. Kontinuierlich arbeitete Groll im Zeitraum von 1842 bis 1871. Erstmals wird sein Werk nun in einer großen Ausstellung vorgestellt, die in Kooperation mit dem Photoinstitut Bonartes entwickelt wurde. Andreas Groll war ab 1853 Berufsfotograf. Im Gegensatz zu den damals schon etablierten Porträtisten oder Atelierfotografen, die ihre Auftraggeber mit den üblichen Versatzstücken in den üblichen Kulissen ablichteten, hatte er, soviel wir wissen, kein eigentliches Atelier. Als er sich nach neun Jahren als Labordiener im Polytechnischen Institut „mit aller Kraft auf die Photographie verlegt“, entstehen nur mehr Bilder „vor Ort“, nicht nur an verschiedenen Plätzen Wiens, sondern auch auf weiten Reisen zwischen Prag und Krakau, zwischen Regensburg und dem Banat, entlang der Strecke der neugebauten Westbahn oder auf Schloss Rosenberg in Südböhmen. Über 1000 Bilder von Andreas Groll sind identifizierbar, in der Ausstellung ist eine Auswahl von rund 180 Aufnahmen zu sehen. Sie zeigen, dass die frühesten Fotografen – was ihre Themen und ihre Bildgestaltung betrifft-zwar einerseits in die Fußstapfen von Zeichnern und Malern traten, sich aber andererseits auch ganz neuen Aufgaben stellten, für die es keine Bildtradition gab. Groll arbeitete sowohl für Architekten wie für Museumskuratoren, aber auch im Auftrag Industriebetrieben und für die sich erst formierende Denkmalpflege.
