Philipp Jakob Spener (1635 - 1705) ist nach Luther der wichtigste und am weitesten wirkende evangelische Theologe der Neuzeit. Mit seinen Pia Desideria von 1675 hat er den lutherischen Pietismus als Bewegung ausgelöst und ihn Jahrzehnte hindurch bestimmt. Mit Recht wird er als der "Vater des Pietismus" bezeichnet. Seine zahlreichen Predigten, Bibelerklärungen, Verteidigungsschriften, Vorreden, seelsorgerlichen Ratschläge und sein umfangreicher Briefwechsel lassen seine große Bedeutung erahnen. Dennoch ist es in den rund 300 Jahren seit Speners Tod nicht zu einer Gesamtausgabe seiner Werke gekommen. Diesem Mangel wird nun endlich durch eine Auswahl der Schriften Speners abgeholfen, in denen sein Anliegen konzentriert zur Sprache kommt. Sie sind auch für den heutigen Leser von Bedeutung. Jeder Schrift ist eine Einführung vorangestellt, den Texten selbst ist ein textkritischer sowie vor allem ein Sachapparat beigegeben, d. h. sachliche Erläuterungen zur jeweiligen Schrift und ihrem gesamten Umfeld. Die Studienausgabe ist auf vier stattliche Bände angelegt.
