Im Sommer 1914 reist ein 14-jähriges Mädchen aus Berlin mit dem Leichnam seiner Mutter auf das Landgut Poll im Baltikum zu seiner aristokratischen Familie. Während der Vater in bizarren anatomischen Studien aufgeht, verliebt es sich in einen verwundeten Anarchisten. Bildgewaltiges, vorzüglich fotografiertes, gespieltes und ausgestattetes Epos als bedrängendes Endzeitbild einer morbiden, dem Untergang geweihten Welt. Zwar werden die Erzählfäden und Themen nur durch eine forcierte Dramaturgie zusammenzuhalten, die den gewaltsamen Einbruch der Historie braucht, um die Ereignisse in eine Form zu zwingen; gleichwohl erweist sich der Film als rares Schmuckstück in der deutschen Filmlandschaft, das mit seinem Glauben an die verändernde Kraft der Liebe tief bewegt.
