Series Statement: Multilevel environmental governance for sustainable development
Content: The idea of sustainable development is often referred to in the public forum, however this does not necessarily mean that it is also widely accepted as a living philosophy, nor that it has come to be embodied in public policy. Consequently, there is a need to precisely examine the problems brought about by the economic mechanisms standing in the way of this goal—in particular globalization—and to draw up plans to counteract these influences. In the meantime, sustainability transitions do require a series of system innovations and transitions, and it is important to foster robust environmental governance for sustainable development. This book aims firstly to examine the implications of the idea of sustainable development for institutional and policy designs. Secondly, it aims to clarify the political, social and economic conditions for successful sustainability transitions, by means of the detailed empirical analysis of a host of challenging social experiments for sustainable development. Finally, it searches for, and formulates, a viable theory of transition management for sustainable development.

Content: Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol that was created in the third Conference of Parties in 1997. This book examines the current status and characteristics of CDM projects in developing countries. Secondly, it clarifies ways to adjust the differences in concerns between China and Japan over economics, the environment, and climate change, and to analyze whether sustainable development impacts can encourage the Chinese government to promote climate change mitigation measures. The book establishes an evaluation framework of CDM that can take sustainable development impacts into account and that can provide useful information when choosing socially efficient CDM projects

Content: Z. Sonoda It is my great honour to declare the opening of the 2nd IBM Japan International Symposium on 'The Global Environment'. It is especially my honour, on behalf of IBM Japan, to welcome all of you most distinguished experts of the world. Historically, IBM Japan has maintained a strong interest in the protection of the global environment, not only as a member of the industrial community, but also as a member of the global community where environmental disruption has become more and more significant and of common concern. In 1990, we held the first environmental symposium on 'Global Warming'. It offered a stage to which both social and natural scientists could bring problems about 'The Global Environment' for in-depth discussions. One of its conclusions includes collaboration about socio economic aspects among the industrialized and developing countries. With this in mind, we now host the 2nd symposium which focuses upon a socio-economic approach to global environmental problems. I understand that the symposium will seek a solution by examining actual experiences and circumstances from various parts of the world, with special attention given to North/South issues. Thus, we have invited guests from America, Europe, and neighbouring Asian countries alike. I wish, and believe, that the symposium will bring about new clues, toward a breakthrough for the betterment of the environment through positive and harmonious discussions in this beautiful setting at the foot of Mt Fuji
