Herbarien stellen einen außergewöhnlichen Sammlungstyp dar: Sie umfassen naturentnommene, materielle Objekte systematischer botanischer Forschung und präsentieren eine konkrete stoffliche Pflanzenbibliothek der Natur- und Wissenschaftsgeschichte. Als Pflanzenstandorte eigener Art ermöglichen sie dem Botaniker den Zugang zu den realen, morphologischen und molekularbiologischen Merkmalen von Pflanzen fernab von Raum und Zeit ihres Vorkommens. Zusammen mit den jedem Fund beigefügten Informationen bildet das Herbarium mit den ungezählten Aufsammlungen, Tauschobjekten und Züchtungen in Botanischen Gärten das materielle Substrat und dokumentierte Abbild einer langen Forschungsarbeit.
Im Promotionsprojekt der Verfasserin wird eine Verknüpfung von Wissenschaftsgeschichte und aktueller systematischer Forschung in der Botanik hergestellt. Der erste Teil des Projektes befasst sich mit Daten, die aus Herbarmaterial ermittelt werden können. Dies soll zu einem biographischen Überblick über Leitgedanken, Arbeitsgebiete und -weisen des Erlanger Professors Wilhelm Daniel Joseph Koch führen. Im Mittelpunkt steht das wissenschaftliche Netzwerk, das er über ganz Europa zu einer Vielzahl bekannter Botaniker seiner Zeit geknüpft hat. Ausgehend von Kochs Wirken wird die Universitäts- und Wissenschaftsgeschichte des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts beleuchtet. In einem zweiten Teil wird durch einen Vergleich von aktueller Feldbotanik und genetischen Analysen und Herbarbelegen systematische Forschung an der Pflanzengruppe Senecio nemorensis L. vorgenommen. Dazu werden Pflanzen der Senecio nemorensis-Gruppe aus dem Koch-Herbar an ihren historischen Fundorten erneut aufgesucht und morphologisch und molekular miteinander verglichen.
