In der Nacht vom 20. auf den 21. August 1968 rückten Truppen des Warschauer Pakts in der Tschechoslowakei ein und beendeten gewaltsam den "Prager Frühling". Vorangegangen waren Monate politischer und militärischer Spannungen. In dieser Situation war der BND gefordert, das politische und militärische Bonn minuziös über die Geschehnisse in der CSSR und den osteuropäischen Hauptstädten zu informieren. Die Studie beschreibt die Anstrengungen des bundesdeutschen Auslands-nachrichtendienstes, in den Krisenmonaten substanzielle Informationen zu beschaffen, umfassende Analysen der Geschehnisse vorzulegen und verlässliche Prognosen aufzustellen. In der Konkurrenz zu Beobachtern und Analysten des Verteidigungsministeriums und des Auswärtigen Amtes konnte der BND nur in Teilaspekten zusätzliche valide Informationen bereitstellen. Für eine Beurteilung der Fragen nach der Wahrscheinlichkeit, den Intentionen, des genauen Zeitpunkts und den unmittelbaren Folgen einer bewaffneten Intervention Moskaus erwiesen sich die Pullacher Möglichkeiten als begrenzt.
